Western Conference leaders Vancouver Canucks suffered an unlikely defeat at home after a tense affair against the San Jose Sharks. The Canucks took the lead in the first period through Henrik Sedin but the Sharks made it all square in the second period through Logan Couture. The game went down to the shootout and Joe Pavelski scored the only shootout goal in the second round while goalie Antti Niemi stopped all three Vancouver shooters. Vancouver is still top of the Western Conference while the Sharks are in 10th position, just one point off the last playoff spot.

Dallas' franchise-record eight-game road winning streak came to an end on Friday as they were outscored by the Calgary Flames. David Moss had a pair of goals and assist as the Flames capitalized on some unconvincing goaltending by Andrew Raycroft, scoring seven times on 19 shots in a 7-4 victory at the Saddledome. Jarome Iginla also had a goal for the Flames, giving him 20 for the 12th consecutive season and the 13th time in 14 NHL seasons. The record is 22 consecutive 20-goal seasons, by Gordie Howe. The Flames remain in 14th place in the Western Conference but a now moved within six points of Chicago and Colorado, who are tied for seventh and hold down the final two playoff spots. The Stars are third in the Western Conference, three points off the top.

Defending champions Chicago Blackhawks backed their playoff bid with a solid performance yesterday as they beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 at Joe Louis Arena. Tomas Kopecky scored twice agains his former team while Dave Bolland and Troy Brouwer each had a goal and an assist. Cory Emmerton hat put the Red Wings ahead in the first period but then Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford made 36 saves, including 20 in the final period, to lead Chicago to their fifth victory in six games. The Red Wings remain second in the Western Conference while the Blackhawks are in 7th position.

The Tampa Bay Lightning demolished the struggling Atlanta Thrashers yesterday, the game ended 7-1. The major damage was done in the second period when the Lightning scored no less than five goals. Simon Gagne scored twice for Tampa Bay while Teddy Purcell had three assists to lead his team to victory. The Lightning are second in the Eastern Conference while the Thrashers are in 8th place.

Western Conference leaders Vancouver Canucks ended a four-game losing streak with a 7-1 demolition job of the Dallas Stars. It was 4-1 at the end of the first period and then there was no looking back for the Canucks who were led by Henrik Sedin with a goal and a pair of assists. Defending champions Chicago Blackhawks suffered yet another setback and this time it was Minnesota who grabbed a solid road win against them. The Wild won despite trailing 1-0 and 2-1 and goalie Niklas Backstrom was strong from start to finish, making 31 saves for the Wild. Minnesota have won four of their last five to get themselves back into the playoff chase,  they are now just one point behind the eighth-place Blackhawks and the Wild have a game in hand.

Western Conference leaders Vancouver Canucks had a tough home game against the Nashville Predators and, after the goalless first two periods, things got worse for the hosts as the Predators took the lead through Shea Weber 37 seconds into the third period. Alexandre Burrows leveled the game 10 minutes later and then rookie Lee Sweatt scored the decisive goal on his debut! The Dallas Stars were hoping to close the gap that separates them of the Western Conference leaders Vancouver Canucks but they got beaten by the Canadian team for the third time in just over a month. Mikael Samuelsson and Christian Ehrhoff scored power-play goals as the Canucks routed the Stars 4-1 at American Airlines Center. Vancouver also got a shorthanded goal from Ryan Kesler and a goal by Alex Burrows, while Daniel Sedin added two assists to help the Canucks move into first place in the overall NHL standings. The Stars are third in the Western Conference, eight points behind the Canucks.

NHL leaders Vancouver Canucks confirmed that they are the best team in the league at the moment with a triumphant 6-0 battering of the Phoenix Coyotes. Ryan Kesler scored his 29th and 30th goals of the season while Cody Hodgson added his first NHL goal in his second NHL game. The game between the Dallas Stars and the Boston Bruins started with no less than three fights inside the very first seconds! The Vancouver Canucks rallied to beat defending champions Chicago Blackhawks in an interesting clash between this season's leaders and last season's winners. The Canucks also had revenge in mind since the Blackhawks eliminated them in each of the last two playoff seasons. Daniel Sedin took over the NHL scoring lead when he took twin brother Henrik's pass in the slot and fired a shot that hit Chicago defender Dave Bolland and went over the blocker of goalie Marty Turco with 4 minutes left, snapping a 3-3 tie. Daniel also had an assist to pass Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos with 69 points. Henrik, the NHL scoring leader last season, had a goal and a pair of assists, while Christian Ehrhoff and Mikael Samuelsson also scored for the Canucks, who lead the overall standings with 77 points. The Blackhawks are out of the playoffs at this moment as they are sitting 9th in the Western Conference, 1 point behind 8th placed Phoenix.

The San Jose Sharks got the better of yesterday's stellar goaltending battle between this season's Vezina Trophy favorite and the reigning Stanley Cup champion in his first season with a new club. Antti Niemi was better than rival Tim Thomas as Boston won thanks to an early power-play goal from Logan Couture. Devin Setoguchi added an empty-net goal with 2.1 seconds remaining for San Jose, which has won seven of its last eight games and moved into fourth place in the Western Conference. Niemi, who helped the Chicago Blackhawks end a 49-year championship drought as a rookie, made 26 saves for his third shutout of the season and the 10th of his career.

Southeast Division leaders Tampa Bay Lightning had a much more difficult game than expected against the St Louis Blues. The Blues were leading 3-2 13 minutes and nine seconds into the third period but Steven Stamkos and Vincent Lecavalier turned things around for Tampa Bay. Lecavalier had the decisive power-play goal at 4:53 in overtime while Stamkos scored his NHL-leading 40th goal of the season. The Lightning are now second in the Eastern Conference, four points behind leaders Philadelphia, while the Blues are second to bottom in the Western Conference.

The Calgary Flames moved into eighth position in the Western Conference after beating defending champions Chicago Blackhawks yesterday. The Flames are in a playoff position for the first time in more than three months. Curtis Glencross scored the winning goal in the third period while goalie Miikka Kiprusoff turned aside 22 shots as the Flames earned a 3-1 win against the Chicago Blackhawks at Scotiabank Saddledome. Mikael Backlund and Rene Bourque had the other goals for the Flames while the Blackhawks slid down into 11th place and see their playoff hopes in jeopardy.

The Philadelphia Flyers extended their winning streak to three games after two goalless periods against the Carolina Hurricanes yesterday. The Detroit Red Wings ended a three-game losing streak with a shocking result at TD Garden, 6-1 against the Boston Bruins. Todd Bertuzzi scored two goals, Henrik Zetterberg and Jiri Hudler each had a goal and a couple of assists and the Red Wings had three goals in the second period after David Krejci scored for Boston late in the first to make it 2-1. NHL leaders Vancouver Canucks made a return to winning ways against the Calgary Flames, a team that hadn't lost in regulation for eleven games! Mikael Samuelsson scored twice midway through the second period to lead the Vancouver Canucks to a 4-2 victory while Alex Burrows also scored twice, one of them into an empty net. Eastern Conference leaders Philadelphia Flyers found no way past Los Angeles goalkeeper Jonathan Quick and the Kings snatched a 1-0 victory at the Wells Fargo Center. Goalie Jonathan Quick watched back-up Jonathan Bernier shut down the Washington Capitals on Saturday, and then went out and did him one better: he turned aside all 40 shots the Philadelphia Flyers threw at him and Drew Doughty scored the game's only goal in a 1-0 victory, the Kings' second straight and third in their last four games. It was Quick's sixth shutout of the season, one less than the career-best seven he had last season. The Flyers remain top of the Eastern Conference while the Kings are 9th in the Western, still in contention for a playoff spot.

NHL leaders Vancouver Canucks suffered a defeat yesterday at the hands of the St Louis Blues. The game was in the balance until Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo made a mistake that allowed the Blues to take the lead. Alex Steen scored when Luongo didn't get all of the puck and wound up slipping it right to Steen, who said thanks and made it 2-1 at 12:17 of the first. Roberto Luongo: "The puck was coming towards me and I thought I had enough time to shove it over there. Obviously, it was a bad decision. He anticipated it and made me look pretty bad." St. Louis won for the third time in the last 10 games. Vancouver lost for the second time in nine games but the Canucks remain top of the Western Conference while the Blues are down in 13th place.

The Toronto Maple Leafs stunned the Boston Bruins last night and managed to grab a surprise 4-3 win. Mikhail Grabovski scored the tiebreaking goal with 1:01 remaining after the Bruins had been leading 1-0 and 3-2. Grabovski and former Bruin Phil Kessel both scored two goals for Toronto, which fell behind 3-2 on Patrice Bergeron's 20th goal of the season with 10:52 to play. But Kessel's second goal of the game tied it with 6:33 left, and Grabovski's game-winner extended Boston's losing streak to three straight games. The Bruins are third in the Eastern Conference while the Maple Leafs are 13th, eight points away from a playoff place.

Defending champions Chicago Blackhawks grabbed a crucial home win against the Minnesota Wild, the two points were absolutely essential for Chicago's playoff hopes. Rookie goalie Corey Crawford had a particularly good games as he kept the Wild off the scoreboard and paved the way for Brian Campbell's power-play goal at 12:59 of the first. Crawford finished with 33 saves while a clutch power-play goal by Troy Brouwer at 7:33 of the third was the game-winner, coming just 34 seconds after Minnesota’s Matt Cullen tied it 1-1. Minnesota are 10th in the Western Conference, just one point above 11th placed Chicago.

The Tampa Bay Lightning failed yet again to beat the Detroit Red Wings, a team that has defeated them five times in a row. The Lightning's last win against Detroit was on January 7 , 2003! NHL leaders Vancouver Canucks returned to winning ways by handing the Dallas Stars their fourth consecutive defeat. Daniel Sedin scored twice and added an assist while Raffi Torres ended a 23-game goal drought with a pair of goals to lead the Canucks to a 5-2 win over the Dallas Stars on Saturday night. Twin brothers Daniel and Henrik Sedin are taking control of the NHL scoring rankings, Daniel is the new leader on 77 points, two more than Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos while Henrik is in third place with 72 points.

Defending champions Chicago Blackhawks are still not giving up hopes of getting a playoff place as they battled hard to overcome the Pittsburgh Penguins last night. They were leading 2-1 with 3 minutes and 18 seconds left in regulation but Brett Sterling's third goal of the season made it all square and sent the game into overtime. Neither team could score in the overtime and that led to the shootout, where Hawks star Patrick Kane scored the lone goal and Chicago rookie goalie Corey Crawford stopped all three Pittsburgh attempts. Pittsburgh is fourth in the Eastern Conference and their presence in the playoffs is almost guaranteed while Chicago is 11th in the West, two points away from the top 8.

The Chicago Blackhawks earned a great comeback victory after being led 2-0 by the Saint Louis Blues. Captain Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane keyed a four-goal second period with a goal and assist apiece while rookie goalie Corey Crawford also had a very good game. The Blues seem to be almost out of the playoff race in the Western Conference, they are down in 13th place on 63 points. The Montreal Canadiens boosted their playoff chances with a historic win in Vancouver, their first in over a decade. The Canadiens took a two-goal lead early in the first period as David Desharnais and Brian Gionta scored 67 seconds apart, Henrik Sedin pulled one back for the Canucks in the second period but Andrei Kostitsyn ended a 12-game goal drought and restored Montreal's two-goal lead. Goalie Carey Price made 12 of his 37 saves in the third period to help the Canadiens hold out for the win. The Canadiens are now sixth in the Eastern Conference while the Canucks are still in command of the Western Conference rankings.

Tyler Myers had a goal and assist, and Ryan Miller made 40 saves to lift the Sabres to a 4-1 win against the Atlanta Thrashers at HSBC Arena on Wednesday night in front of new Sabres owner Terry Pegula. It was an important game for both sides as they are trying to clinch a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference but Atlanta seem to be losing speed after the fourth consecutive defeat. The Chicago Blackhawks grabbed their third consecutive win yesterday at Nashville and that finally pushed them into a playoff spot, 7th in the Western Conference. Tomas Kopecky and Marian Hossa scored and goaltender Corey Crawford stopped 31 shots as the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Nashville Predators 3-0 with Patrick Sharp adding an empty netter around 30 seconds before the end of the game. The New Jersey Devils were boasting an eight-game winning streak before coming to Tampa Bay yesterday and that run came to an end as the Lightning won 1-0. Tampa Bay is not a good place to bring a winning streak as two nights earlier the Bolts thrashed Phoenix 8-3, ending the Coyotes' eight-game streak. Martin St. Louis and Simon Gagne scored early in the second period for Tampa Bay and that was enough to secure the win. The Lightning are second in the Eastern Conference while the Devils are down in 13th place with their playoff hopes being severely reduced.

With around 20 games left to play before the playoffs the Chicago Blackhawks managed to grab another important two points as the defending champions edged past the Phoenix Coyotes after an exciting game and a nervy shootout. Jonathan Toews was the man of the match as he scored twice to put Chicago ahead in the first period and then wrapped up the impressive night by scoring the only shootout goal. The Blackhawks are still on the outside of the playoff picture as they are sitting in ninth with 72 points, which is just two points behind the fifth-place Los Angeles Kings and one spot ahead of the Nashville Predators who also have 72. Defending Stanley Cup winners Chicago Blackhawks boosted their playoff chances after recording the fifth consecutive win, 4-2 at Western Conference rivals Minnesota Wild. Western Conference leaders Vancouver Canucks had a tough game against the Columbus Blue Jackets but won it in the end thanks to a great performance from goalkeeper Roberto Luongo. Vancouver had taken the lead in the first period through Mason Raymond but the Blue Jackets made it all square in the second when Scottie Upshall scored the equalizer. The game went to the shootout and Raffi Torres scored in the eighth round to give the Canucks the win while Roberto Luongo stopped six shooters after making 30 saves in the first 65 minutes. The Canucks are top of the Western Conference on 89 points while the Blue Jackets are in 12th place, five points away from a playoff spot.

The Chicago Blackhawks seem to have found the right form at the best time of the season as the defending champions recorded the sixth consecutive win yesterday. The Hawks beat the Calgary Flames 6-4 and moved up into fourth place in the Western Conference. Jonathan Toews was the man who led the Blackhawks again, he scored twice for the home team. The Nashville Predators pulled off a big upset in Vancouver to boost their playoff chances as they beat the NHL-leading Canucks 3-0! The first two periods were goalless and that was largely due to Predators goalie Pekka Rinne who stopped 29 shots but the third period saw Nashville stepping into the spotlight. Blake Geoffrion scored the opening goal 1:59 into the third period and then Patric Hornqvist added an insurance goal with 2:21 left and David Legwand completed the scoring with a late empty-netter. The Canucks remain atop of the NHL overall standings despite the defeat while the Predators are now sixth in the Western Conference.

The Chicago Blackhawks continued their triumphant march and it was their captain who led them to victory again. Jonathan Toews scored a goal to extend his point streak to nine games and the Chicago Blackhawks won their eighth straight game, beating the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-3 on Saturday night at the Air Canada Centre. Marian Hossa, Michael Frolik, Viktor Stalberg and Bryan Bickell also scored for Chicago and the Blackhawks were leading 5-1 at the end of the second period. Joffrey Lupul, Joey Crabb and Luke Schenn replied for Toronto but they didn't have enough strength to complete a fightback. The Blackhawks remain fourth in the Western Conference but now they are five points clear of ninth placed Anaheim while the Maple Leafs are 10th in the Eastern Conference rankings.

The Vancouver Canucks finally managed to win two games in a row, they had to wait around a month for that to happen. Cory Schneider made 26 saves for his first ever career shutout, Manny Malhotra scored two goals and the NHL-leading Vancouver Canucks beat the Anaheim Ducks 3-0 at the Honda Center on Sunday night. NHL scoring leader Daniel Sedin added a power-play goal to his already impressive tally and the Canucks consolidate their lead in the Western Conference. The Dallas Stars grabbed an important victory against the Los Angeles Kings after being forced to come back from one-goal deficits three times during the game. The Chicago Blackhawks were stopped by the Florida Panthers yesterday and that put an end to their eight-game winning streak. The Hawks paid the price for a poor start as the Panthers scored three goals in the first period through David Booth, Clay Wilson and Marty Reasoner. Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa scored in the second period to put Chicago back in the match but Florida held out thanks to goalie Tomas Vokoun who stopped 37 shots to give coach Pete DeBoer his 100th NHL win. The Tampa Bay Lightning put an end to a four-game losing streak after edging past the Chicago Blackhawks in a tense game that ended with a shoot-out. Martin St. Louis scored the only game of the shootout to give Tampa Bay the win as Chicago came back from 3-1 behind to send the game into overtime. Steven Stamkos, Martin St. Louis and Teddy Purcell scored for Tampa Bay, helping build a 3-1 lead before the defending Stanley Cup champions roared back on goals by Patrick Sharp and Jonathan Toews. The Lightining are now fifth in the Eastern Conference while the Blackhawks remain 4th in the West.

The Nashville Predators were in desperate need of a win against playoff rivals Minnesota Wild and they got it in style as they beat their visitors quite comfortably, 4-0. Goalie Pekka Rinne stopped all 19 shots he faced for his sixth shutout of the season, left wing Nick Spaling scored twice, Martin Erat also got his name on the score sheet while Joel Ward scored one goal himself along with two assists. The Predators moved into ninth place in the West with 78 points, one behind eighth-place Los Angeles, while Minnesota dropped into 11th place with 77 points.

The Dallas Stars managed to climb up into fourth place in the Western Conference after beating the Minnesota Wild at home for the 14th time in a row. The game was not much of a problem for the home side as goalie Kari Lehtonen had to stop just 14 shots while Jamie Benn opened the scoring in the first period. The second period killed off the contest for good as Trevor Daley, Tom Wandell and Mike Ribeiro scored to make it 4-0. It was the second consecutive defeat for the Wild who find themselves four points away from the last playoff spot.

The Vancouver Canucks added a fifth consecutive win to their streak after a spectacular game at the Calgary Flames. The Flames surged to an early lead through goals from Mikael Backlund and Matt Stajan but the Canucks made it all square in the second period through Ryan Kesler and Daniel Sedin. David Moss put he home side again but Daniel Sedin was unstoppable as he scored the winning goal after providing the assist for Alexandre Burrows' equalizer.
