    Fine breakaway victory for Schachmann, but the big news of the day is that Simon Yates is showing the first signs of weakness. He got dropped by Dumoulin, Froome and Pozzovivo and he count himself rather lucky that he lost just under half a minute.

    Mooie ontsnappingszege voor Schachmann, maar het grote nieuws van de dag is dat Simon Yates de eerste tekenen van zwakte vertoont. Hij werd gedropt door Dumoulin, Froome en Pozzovivo en hij mag zich gelukkig prijzen dat hij een kleine halve minuut verloor.

    Friday's stage 19 is a monster and it could have a serious impact in the general classification: it starts with a second-category climb, then continues with the highest mountain peak of this year's Giro, Colle delle Finestre, then a third-category climb before the final ascent to Bardonecchia, a brutal 7km climb with an average gradient around 10%.

    De 19e etappe van vrijdag is een monster en kan serieuze gevolgen hebben voor het algemeen klassement: hij begint met een klim van tweede categorie, gaat dan verder met de hoogste bergtop van de Giro van dit jaar, Colle delle Finestre, en daarna een klim van derde categorie de laatste klim naar Bardonecchia, een brute klim van 7 km met een gemiddeld stijgingspercentage van ongeveer 10%.

    Well, strange things are happening: Chris Froome pulled off an amazing 80km solo attack on today stage and grabbed the pink jersey in the process, while Yates crumbled and lost over 40 minutes. What Froome did today is something that we rarely see in today's cycling. Unfortunately, the last time I saw something like that was in the 2006 Tour de France, Floyd Landis pulled off such an attack and we all know what happened later... I hope we won't witness the same thing all over again.

    Er gebeuren vreemde dingen: Chris Froome voerde op de etappe van vandaag een verbazingwekkende solo-aanval van 80 km uit en pakte daarbij de roze trui, terwijl Yates afbrokkelde en meer dan 40 minuten verloor. Wat Froome vandaag deed, is iets dat we zelden zien in het hedendaagse wielrennen. Helaas, de laatste keer dat ik zoiets zag, was in de Tour de France van 2006, Floyd Landis voerde zo'n aanval uit en we weten allemaal wat er later gebeurde... Ik hoop dat we niet opnieuw hetzelfde zullen meemaken.

    What an epic stage,

    I think Sky's tactic was really wise and brave, they knew Froome couldn't won the giro if he attacks at the last climb so that was very risky but it worked perfectly, I don't think Froome came here for just a top 3 finish so that's a thinking of a champion.

    In fact I've expected that but wasn't sure Sky would of do it, they've never acted like that so far in the big tours.

     

    You've mentioned Landis in 2006 Johnny and I remember that but meanwhile Kontador made a few of these long attacks a few times on the big tours (not every time successful of course) and today was classic Kontador attack made by Froome and believe me I don't even like the Spaniard so it's tough for me say that.

     

    What happened to Yates?! I think the same as that to Chaves but it's still a misery for both I think, that was a huge blow from a rider who looks certain to win the giro just a couple of days back.

    I think the possible reasons for that could be just a few;

    Too good form too early in the race?

    Too much effort in the time trial? (doesn't look to be the case with Chaves though)

    Bad recovery from the previous stages and too much excitement or nerves which potentially could break your sleep(and that's important we know) or probably combination of all  those factors?

     

    But let's see what will happen tomorrow, the race is still not over yet, Froome put a lot of effort today  so could that be costly tomorrow?

    I don't believe it cause generally Sky are by far the better team here and they wisely saved all the Froome team-mates efforts before the 3-rd week so..

     

    That Giro is maybe the most interesting cycling race I've seen like..ever!! and I'm watching the big tours at least, for more than 20 years.

    Ik denk dat de tactiek van Sky heel wijs en moedig was. Ze wisten dat Froome de Giro niet kon winnen als hij zou aanvallen op de laatste klim, dus dat was erg riskant, maar het werkte perfect. Ik denk niet dat Froome hier alleen maar voor een top 3-finish kwam dus dat is het denken van een kampioen.

    Eigenlijk had ik dat wel verwacht, maar ik wist niet zeker of Sky het zou doen. Zo hebben ze zich tot nu toe nog nooit gedragen in de grote tours.

    Je hebt Landis genoemd in 2006, Johnny en ik herinner me dat, maar ondertussen maakte Kontador een paar keer een paar van deze lange aanvallen op de grote rondes (niet elke keer succesvol natuurlijk) en vandaag was de klassieke Kontador-aanval gemaakt door Froome en geloof me, ik Ik hou niet eens van de Spanjaard, dus het is moeilijk voor mij om dat te zeggen.

    Wat is er met Yates gebeurd?! Ik denk hetzelfde voor Chaves, maar het is nog steeds een ellende voor beiden, denk ik, dat was een enorme klap van een renner die er zeker van is dat hij de Giro een paar dagen geleden zal winnen.

    Ik denk dat er maar een paar mogelijke redenen daarvoor kunnen zijn;

    Te goede vorm te vroeg in de race?

    Te veel moeite in de tijdrit? (lijkt echter niet het geval te zijn bij Chaves)

    Slecht herstel van de voorgaande fasen en te veel opwinding of zenuwen die mogelijk uw slaap kunnen verstoren (en dat is belangrijk, dat weten we) of waarschijnlijk een combinatie van al deze factoren?

    Maar laten we eens kijken wat er morgen gaat gebeuren, de race is nog steeds niet voorbij, Froome heeft vandaag veel moeite gedaan dus kan dat morgen kostbaar worden?

    Ik geloof het niet, want over het algemeen is Sky hier veruit het betere team en ze hebben wijselijk alle inspanningen van Froome-teamgenoten vóór de derde week bewaard, dus ...

    Die Giro is misschien wel de meest interessante wielerwedstrijd die ik ooit heb gezien!! en ik kijk al meer dan twintig jaar naar de grote tours.

    Recovery is essential in a Grand Tour, and I think that is where Yates failed. I felt very bad for him, the pink jersey struggling so many kilometers from the finish was a sad sight.

     

    I agree that an attack from far out was Froome's only chance, and it took some courage to pull it off and also a very big effort from the team to set it up.

     

    Hopefully that's all that he had today, great courage, a big heart and great legs. I've gone through so many disappointments over the past couple of decades in cycling so I won't be very enthusiastic when I see such an "out of this world" performance. I remember an Italian rider about 10 years ago, Emmanuele Sella, he won a mountain stage at the Giro in a similar fashion, with an attack from way out. I was thrilled to see him win that stage, it was... epic. Then, a few weeks later, the news broke: he was doped up to his ears and beyond.

    Herstel is essentieel in een grote ronde, en ik denk dat dat is waar Yates faalde. Ik vond het heel erg voor hem, de roze trui die zoveel kilometers van de finish worstelde was een triest gezicht.

    Ik ben het ermee eens dat een aanval van veraf de enige kans van Froome was, en dat er wat moed voor nodig was om die voor elkaar te krijgen, en ook een hele grote inspanning van het team om die op te zetten.

    Hopelijk is dat alles wat hij vandaag had: grote moed, een groot hart en geweldige benen. Ik heb de afgelopen decennia zoveel teleurstellingen meegemaakt in de wielersport, dus ik zal niet erg enthousiast zijn als ik zo'n "niet van deze wereld" prestatie zie. Ik herinner me een Italiaanse renner van ongeveer tien jaar geleden, Emmanuele Sella. Hij won op soortgelijke wijze een bergetappe in de Giro, met een aanval van ver naar buiten. Ik was heel blij om hem die etappe te zien winnen, het was... episch. Toen, een paar weken later, kwam het nieuws: hij was tot aan zijn oren gedoteerd en verder.

    Yeah let's hope everything would be fine with Froome, in the end he's already expecting a decision and potential penalty so I couldn't imagine he would use something not allowed meanwhile, it seems they will take from him his Vuelta or this eventual Giro win but depends of the penalty size and time period of course.

    And yeah a lot of doping scandals in cycling over the years but I think part of the reason is because the doping control in this sport is a lot stronger than most of the rest for sure.

    Ja, laten we hopen dat alles goed komt met Froome, uiteindelijk verwacht hij al een beslissing en een mogelijke straf, dus ik kon me niet voorstellen dat hij iets zou gebruiken dat ondertussen niet is toegestaan. Het lijkt erop dat ze hem zijn Vuelta of deze uiteindelijke Giro-overwinning zullen afnemen, maar hangt uiteraard af van de hoogte van de boete en de duur ervan.

    En ja, er zijn door de jaren heen veel dopingschandalen in de wielersport geweest, maar ik denk dat een deel van de reden is dat de dopingcontrole in deze sport zeker een stuk sterker is dan in de meeste andere sporten.

    Chris Foome sealed the deal on stage 20, now the Giro-Tour double is a real possibility for him. Nieve won the stage from the breakaway while Pinot has totally broken down from fatigue and eventually decided to retire.

    Chris Foome bezegelde de deal in etappe 20, nu is de Giro-Tour-dubbel een reële mogelijkheid voor hem. Nieve won de etappe vanuit de kopgroep, terwijl Pinot volledig bezweken was door vermoeidheid en uiteindelijk besloot met pensioen te gaan.

    Chris Foome sealed the deal on stage 20, now the Giro-Tour double is a real possibility for him.

    I don't know mate, Quintana, Contdor and few others tried that in the last years and they all looked exhausted in the deciding stages on tour, I know this season is a bit different cause the break between the two races isa bit longer but it's still an immense task.

    Good luck to Froome though I really hope he could do better and eventually win the tour too.

    Ik weet het niet, maat, Quintana, Contdor en een paar anderen hebben dat de afgelopen jaren geprobeerd en ze zagen er allemaal uitgeput uit in de beslissende etappes op de tour. Ik weet dat dit seizoen een beetje anders is omdat de pauze tussen de twee races wat langer is, maar het is nog steeds een enorme opgave.

    Veel succes voor Froome, maar ik hoop echt dat hij het beter kan doen en uiteindelijk ook de tour kan winnen.

    Froome was not in peak form at the Giro, I think his training schedule was designed in order for him to reach peak form at the Tour de France. In theory he should be better at the Tour than he was at the Giro, granted he manages to recover quickly from the effort that he put in.

    Froome was niet in topvorm in de Giro, ik denk dat zijn trainingsschema zo was ontworpen dat hij topvorm zou bereiken in de Tour de France. In theorie zou hij in de Tour beter moeten zijn dan in de Giro, mits hij snel weet te herstellen van de inspanning die hij heeft geleverd.
