THE AMAZON-OWNED COMPANY IS FACING PRESSURE FROM AUTHORITIES OVER GAMBLING INFLUENCERS
According to a new investigation in Sweden, eight out of ten Swedish streaming influencers may have been complacent with unregulated gambling operators, promoting them through Twitch, a popular streaming platform.
The allegations levelled against the platform and influencers come from Sveriges Television’s Kulturnyheterna, which took six weeks to investigate the matter and said that a significant number of Twitch streamers were indeed pushing unlicensed casinos onto their followers.
Although Twitch has officially prohibited the promotion of gambling websites that do not hold a license in the targeted jurisdiction, and prompted the creation of rival Kick.com which stole some of the Amazon-owned streaming platform’s biggest stars.
Nevertheless, the Kulturnyheterna investigation indicates that Swedish streamers are still using the platform to promote illegal gambling websites. The targeted streamers in question had a collective reach of half a million subscribers and used direct marketing such as links to online casinos to drive traffic.
“The influencers are seen making direct calls to gamble, playing along with their audience and involving viewers in decisions on stakes, deepening engagement in gambling activities,” a translated statement from the media reads. The investigation and its findings have already been referred to the country’s gambling authority, the Spelinspektionen, which can conduct further investigation.
If found to be in breach of gambling laws, the streamers could face serious consequences, including but not limited to financial penalties.
